Marathon Golf 2011- Ysgol Pendalar
At 3.55 a.m on Monday morning June 13th I opened the curtains and looked out of the window to see a constant drizzle in the murky misty dawn. This was the day for our marathon golf day at Caernarfon Golf Club. No school today for me but non-stop golf from 5.00a.m until 9.45p.m.
Could I justify being away from school all day? I thought about all the courses I have attended over the years and about the number of times I had returned to school the next day saying what a complete waste of time that was. I thought about executives in business flying to exotic places to sell their products or on fact finding visits and I came to the conclusion that my time at Caernarfon Golf Club would be time well spent, especially as the whole day was being filmed by S4C programme Wedi 7. Pictures about the work being done at our special school would be shown at homes throughout Wales and our constant search for vital funding would also be highlighted.
Driving to the course at 4.30a.m Archie noted that the rain had stopped so I switched off the wipers and that was it for the day. John and Geraint Hardy were waiting for us at the golf club and then the others arrived, Jonathan next, after a mad dash down the A55 after over-sleeping (that's what he said
anyhow!) then Gwyn Bach, both of them my golfing partners at St Deiniol, Bangor and both insomniacs! Rich our school caretaker then arrived with long hitting Chris and all eight of us were ready to begin at 5.05 a.m. We drew for partners and off we went in the golf buggies kindly donated by our good friend Robert Parry (GNH Golf). By 9.45 pm and 5 rounds later we were to be really grateful for these buggies.
Both Enids supplied us with bacon baps after the first round and a welcome cup of coffee. Diolch genod! I tried to ignore the little undercurrent of dissatisfaction between some elements of the golf clubs' officials who seemed unaware of what was going on. However the welcome we had from Dave the steward and Wil Williams the captain and Glyn Chips his vice-captain and the Monday crowd, who were very tolerant of the hold ups in play due to the constant filming throughout the morning, more than made up for the little element of negativity which did not spoil an excellent day.
Many thanks to everyone who contributed towards the day's success and to the sponsors; Barclays Bank and GNH Golf. It is hoped that we have raised over
£2,000 on the day which will help a great deal towards our target of £12,500 which we need for the brand new Lord's Taverners mini bus for our special care kids which will hopefully be delivered in October. Special thanks to Wil Ty Hapus for his tireless work in raising money for this project and to all the tired golfers; John Hardy; Geraint Hardy; Rhys (Archie) Parry; Dafydd Parry; Richard T. Jones; Chris Roberts; Wil Ty Hapus; Glyn Chips; Iestyn Garlick; Jonathan Williams; Gwyn Jones and Ieuan Roberts. Thanks also to the Wedi 7 crew for their sensitive presentation and covering of the day's events.

Blog by Keith Towler, Children's Commissioner for Wales

We built this city on rock and roll
Sometimes I stay in some interesting places when I'm on my travels around Wales but breakfast this morning was pretty unique. I was buttering my toast as the cleaner of the bed and breakfast I was staying in belted out: "We built this city on rock and roll" at the top of her voice. No holds barred.
The Jefferson Starship classic was obviously one of her favourites. No doubt in her head her singing was in tune but to my ear she was truly awful.
Perhaps I should have told her but when I looked into the kitchen through the open door and saw she was using her mop as an electric guitar I just didn't have the heart.
The day before I spent some time in Ysgol Pendalar in Caernarfon before meeting with the Flintshire Young Carers Forum. Both were really great visits.
I have been to Pendalar before - two years ago - and this time I was invited to do so by Hayley, one of the pupils, who I met at the Clebran meeting a few weeks ago. It was lovely to meet her again and to meet some of her classmates. I wrote a blog about the Clebran meeting. The blog was called "Size 10s" because one of the questions I got was about the size of my feet. Unfortunately the young person who wrote that question could not make the Clebran meeting but I met him at Pendalar and thanked him for the most unique of questions!
Louise, one of our volunteers, came along on the visit and it was good to see that the school has developed even further since I was last there. On that occasion I remember that Mr. Roberts, the head teacher, told me how much effort is put into raising funds for the school so the pupils can enjoy the full range of activities the school wants to provide. And again Mr. Roberts raised the same funding issues but this time he had a dossier in hand. As a special school the funding Pendalar enjoys is dependent upon a formula that assesses the learning needs of its pupils. There are five funding bands from 1* for exceptional needs through to 5. No doubt the assessment process is a complicated one and the dossier that Mr. Roberts handed over compared the funding position in Gwynedd with other parts of Wales.
Some of the figures are startling. For example a pupil with exceptional learning needs at band 1* is funded to the tune of £17,729 in Gwynedd but in Ynys Mon the funding level for the same band is set at £18,870. At level 1 Gwynedd fund at £14,254 and in Ynys Mon at £12,218; but at level 2 Gwynedd pay 10,276 and Yns Mon at 12,218 and at level 4 Gwynedd pay 7,627 and Ynys Mon at £12,218. These pay discrepancies appear, on the face of it, to disadvantage pupils with special needs in Gwynedd. Mr. Roberts' dossier had funding levels from other councils in Wales including Flintshire, Conwy and the Vale of Glamorgan. At level 1 they fund places at £18,522, £16,842 and £16,954 respectively.
I will discuss with the team what we might do with this information? My powers as Commissioner do not extend to funding decisions but I can't help but feel that I need to verify these figures and discuss with the team any steps we may take.

August 2008 ~ Mrs Eurwen Davies
Eurwen can count herself fortunate to have experienced the exciting periods of transition within special education during her time at Pendalar.
The first change has seen the movement from basic ‘care’ of our pupils to the process of providing stimulating education. Long gone are the days of 2 staff with 8 or 9 pupils- (health and safety standards would not allow such a ratio these days)- as well as taking the pupils for residential experiences and not sleeping for nights on end! Nowadays special schools are inspected by ESTYN as rigorously as mainstream schools. Eurwen has also had the pleasure of moving to a brand new purpose built school and she threw herself into the project with the enthusiasm of a newly qualified teacher.
This will be my memory of her, that dedication and enthusiasm for the profession and all channelled towards the well being of the pupils and their families. She has helped so many families over the years and I know that they really appreciated the love she had for generations of Pendalar pupils.
Beneath the no-nonsense and seemingly intimidating first impression there is a really soft heart and she has helped and nurtured many young teachers and teaching assistants as they looked up to her as a ‘mother’ figure.
She has been a great deputy head teacher for me as I have sounded her out for advice on many occasions and she would say straight away what was on her mind. She has always supported me in the numerous battles we have faced with getting the new school and with the constant struggle we have in ensuring basic rights for our pupils.
I wish her well for the future and I know we will see a lot of her as she will be coming in next term to complete many schemes she has started since we moved in to our new building last September.
