August 2008 ~ Mrs Eurwen Davies
Eurwen can count herself fortunate to have experienced the exciting periods of transition within special education during her time at Pendalar.
The first change has seen the movement from basic ‘care’ of our pupils to the process of providing stimulating education. Long gone are the days of 2 staff with 8 or 9 pupils- (health and safety standards would not allow such a ratio these days)- as well as taking the pupils for residential experiences and not sleeping for nights on end! Nowadays special schools are inspected by ESTYN as rigorously as mainstream schools. Eurwen has also had the pleasure of moving to a brand new purpose built school and she threw herself into the project with the enthusiasm of a newly qualified teacher.
This will be my memory of her, that dedication and enthusiasm for the profession and all channelled towards the well being of the pupils and their families. She has helped so many families over the years and I know that they really appreciated the love she had for generations of Pendalar pupils.
Beneath the no-nonsense and seemingly intimidating first impression there is a really soft heart and she has helped and nurtured many young teachers and teaching assistants as they looked up to her as a ‘mother’ figure.
She has been a great deputy head teacher for me as I have sounded her out for advice on many occasions and she would say straight away what was on her mind. She has always supported me in the numerous battles we have faced with getting the new school and with the constant struggle we have in ensuring basic rights for our pupils.
I wish her well for the future and I know we will see a lot of her as she will be coming in next term to complete many schemes she has started since we moved in to our new building last September.
