Lucy Greenly Jones
1991-2005
A celebration of the life of Lucy Greenly Jones
Lucy first came to Pendalar in 1993 and left us in April 2005. When you first met Lucy you might be forgiven for seeing her disabilities first, not the child with real character within. Lucy had her own ways to show anyone who worked with her how much of that character she really had. She was stubborn with a real strength of will that was balanced with a wonderfully wicked sense of humour. She would deliberately tease anyone that was with her if she felt like it, especially me, her teacher! The number of occasions I spent setting up activities for her, especially with the computer. I’d set up the switch and the game as she watched and waited, with me talking about what we were going to do, until I sat down beside her ready to work and she would look at me, smile sometimes, sometimes not and just close her eyes as if to say ‘I’m not doing that today!’ And there was nothing that would persuade her other wise. But that was the pleasure in Lucy’s company, despite all her disabilities and all her health problems, she was our Lucy, independent of spirit, and independent of mind, just like any other awkward teenager and you couldn’t help your self but smile!
There is a gap in our class and a gap in our school, where all who had the pleasure of knowing and working with her will sadly miss her, but we’re all the richer because she was part of our lives.

New Website
At last we have the opportunity to be able to show people what actually goes on within a special school like Ysgol Pendalar. Today’s launch of the school’s new web site will enable parents, friends, politicians, staff from mainstream schools or the public in general, to understand the philosophy, ethos and work of the school and to discuss, or learn about, other issues involving special education.
We find that, even in 2004, people visit the school and they have no idea what to expect and they go away in amazement that our children can read and write and can use computers as well as learn many other skills relevant to everyday life. Today’s launch will open up a whole new world for many people, a wonderful world of much happiness as well as some sadness, of hard work and great fun and basically a world which is crying out to be understood.
Meic Roberts from Delwedd has started to fill the web site but he intends to spend many hours this summer working to keep the web site up to date so that by September more and more parents will feel even closer to us than before and we will have more and more friends who will at last have a balanced and educated view of the world of special education.

North Wales Special Games
The North Wales Special Games were held at Bangor on the 7th July. Nine pupils represented the school, competing in the swimming and athletics events. The swimming competition took place in the Bangor Swimming Pool, where four pupils took part in the gala. Ten medals were won by the four pupils competed. Dan, Neil and Kyle representing the school in the relay race, and a bronze medal was won.
After an enjoyable evening of singing and dancing at the disco, everyone had a good night's rest to prepare for athletics at Treborth Track on Thursday.
Although the weather was not in our favour, the nine pupils did their best on the track and field, and won a total of twenty medals.
