Pedlo Pendalar 2007

Saturday September 22nd 2007
(A journey of about 35 miles)
The annual sponsored Pendalar School cycle ride has hopefully raised over £3000 towards the school's appeal for specialist equipment in the new school.
Ably led by Rownd a Rownd's Dafydd Charles, over 40 cyclists rode from Y Felinheli to Bryncir and back to Y Felinheli in changeable weather. The day was marred at the end of the journey when Elfyn Evans, who raised over £1,000 for the school 2 years ago running in the London marathon) was badly injured coming down Dinas Hill in Felinheli. After hospital treatment Elfyn was allowed home that evening.

Many thanks to all who supported the 6th cycle ride especially;

Billy and Sharon at the Garddfon, Y Felinheli for feeding the weary cyclists at the end of the journey
Staff at the Halfway House Felinheli for a warm send off & use of car park.

£4072 raised in Charity Golf Day

230 golfers enjoyed a beautiful sunny day at Bangor's St Deiniol Golf Club and were then entertained by Tudur Owen and Emyr 'Himyrs' Roberts during the evening. By the end of a very long day for organisers Viv Williams and Ieuan Roberts, Pendalar Special School in Caernarfon had increased it's school fund by £4000+.
This was the 11th annual Pendalar School golf tournament and the event just goes from strength to strength with old friends returning every year to support the Caernarfon based special school even though almost half of the pupils at the school are from the Bangor/Bethesda area. Added to the South Wales visitors this year was ex-Stereophonics drummer Stuart Cable and he enjoyed himself so much that he has promised to return next year.
Special thanks to all who contributed to the success of the day especially to the following; Nant; CDH; Beresford Adams; Mortgage Buyers, Bangor; (as sponsors) and Robert Parry (Golf Buggies, Pwllheli) and Meditec who gave their services towards the event.

Galeri Caernarfon 10/03/07
Sponsored by: Dafydd Hardy a’i Gwmni

The third nostalgic evening of the Welsh popscene of yesteryear was held last Saturday at Galeri and despite a slightly disappointing audience of 70 the mood and atmosphere of previous Nostalgia evenings was maintained. BBC's Dafydd Du introduced old favourites like Cyffro, Anrhefn and Heather Jones along with the younger Gwyneth Glyn who felt like a gatecrasher but still insisted she had a right to be on stage because she sang nostalgic songs! Everyone present thoroughly enjoyed the professional way the performers presented their songs and appreciated the fact that all artistes gave their time free of charge for the Pendalar Appeal. It is hoped that about £500 will have been raised towards the Appeal.

Ieuan Roberts and one of the pupils receiving a cheque for £355 towards the Pendalar Appeal from Ann Hughes and Anita Jones from the Environment Agency. Many thanks.

Thanks to these pupils from Rhostryfan primary school for raising money for the Pendalar Appeal by playing the flute outside Tesco in Caernarfon over the Christmas period.

Ceri Williams' mam, Dosbarth Hafan came up with the idea for a cake stall on the maes in Spetember by the time we got the licence sorted it was arranged for the 1st Of Decmber which seemed a good idea - nearer the time we began to look for the weather forecast - we were blessed with dry but cold weather. The response for the cake stall was wonderful from the children, parents and lots of Nains. We had loads of delicious cakes, knitted goods by Lee's Nain and her friend, rainbow cakes from Dosbarth llydaw, as well as different assortments from the other classes made during cookery lessons, Christmas cards were for sale as well. Everything wnet really well. teh staff from Argos even made late orders fulfilled by Heather Ceri's Mam after the actual event which were an added bonus! Several of the children from seiont helped out on the stall as did Heather's friend. Almost all the school came down to see how it was going - a good time was had by all and we managed to raise £550 towards the appeal.Click here to view the photos.

Haf goes that extra mile!

Haf Thomas, a former pupil at Ysgol Pendalar, swam 64 lengths at Caernarfon’s Leisure Centre last night to raise money for Pendalar School’s Appeal. The original idea was to swim 60 lengths but Haf’s Dad Irfon had worked it out that an extra 4 lengths meant that Haf had swum exactly one mile! It cost Irfon an extra £10 a length but judging by the support Haf received by ex pupils and staff as well as present staff and many of her friends and neighbours it looks as if she will have raised a hefty four figure sum for the school.

'It was amazing watching her going up and down the pool taking one minute for every length and she never stopped once. We have invited Haf to a special service at the school on Thursday morning so all the pupils can say a big thankyou to this remarkable young lady who has shown us all what can be achieved by going that extra mile to help someone else.

Haf Thomas responds to all the school shouting Hip Hip Hooray!

Pendalar’s Pie Prize!

Huw ‘ate all the pies’ Wirion; Bob ‘Sweety Pie’ Sweet; Barry ‘never made a pie’ Beynon; and Ricky ‘Mam made my pie’ Williams all took time off last week to prepare a huge steak and ale pie to settle a pious argument, which one of them could produce the best pie.

On Friday night November 17th many pioneers ventured into the Vic pub at Y Felinheli to sample the cuisinary delights of the four combatants and by popular choice Bob ‘Sweety Pie’ Sweet was confirmed as the Pieman of the Year. However the biggest winner was Ysgol Pendalar’s Appeal when popular landlord Al ‘Wern’ Williams presented the school’s headteacher with a cheque for £500.

Winner Bob Sweet (Sweety Pie).

Friday 27/10/06

Thanks to Lee Royle (Senior Unit) who thought of a sponsored walk to raise money for Pendalar Appeal. We looked to have raised almost £1000 on a rainy Friday morning. Lee, from Caernarfon, raised over £350 himself and Dad Paul ensured match funding from Scottish Power which boosted the funds greatly. All the school’s staff and pupils and some parents took part in the walk and everyone had a good soaking.

Many thanks to Gwynedd Roberts from Glynllifon for his very warm welcome and to Gerallt Pennant for making the forest come alive for many of Pendalar’s pupils and to Express Motors for their very generous gesture transporting the children from the school to Glynllifon and back in time for dinner.

Footballers change codes

Some current and a lot of ex-footballers from the Caernarfon area changed their boots for golf clubs on Sunday October 1st at Caernarfon Golf Club in order to raise money for Pendalar School’s Appeal. Almost £800 was raised in an afternoon’s golf which started in warm sunshine but ended in heavy showers.

Many thanks to Ken Owen, Maldwyn Lloyd, Idwal Roberts; David and Allan (Stone) Jones and to Caernarfon Golf Club and their captain Vernon Evans for their warm welcome.

Will Williams (Jim Royle look-alike) from Ty Hapus Guest House (who has raised a great deal of money for the school) led a team of guests which included the school’s headteacher & friends but despite an entertaining day’s golf they were not awarded any prizes. As Ken Owen stated during the evening presentation there was only one winner on the day and that was Pendalar School.

Main prize was won by George Denham’s team (Keith Williams, Gari Ellis and Kelvin Williams) and Ken Owen won both the Longest Drive and the Nearest The Pin competition.

Pendalar's newly appointed teacher Awen Davies-Jones' report on the charity pop concert (Pop Pendalar) held at Galeri last Saturday evening September 23rd.
Many thanks to Principality for sponsoring the evening.

Congratulations to Sarah Wynn of Bethel for organising the Pop Pendalar 2006 gig which was held at Galeri last Saturday night. Galeri proved to be an ideal venue and the evening was a great success, with over 200 people in the audience. A broad spectrum of different artists performed, with XMS 3 opening the event. We had fun in the company of Zoo Technics, especially the song “Pictionary, dictionary”! We were then entertained by the talented singer from Caernarfon – Sarah Louise. After a short break, Gola Ola came onto the stage, a very talented band from Porthmadog – look out for this band! By now the young audience were on their feet dancing, especially to the sound of Sarah Wynn’s dance music. To close the evening, we had a feast of Mim Twm Llai’s popular songs with everybody – (even Mr Roberts!) singing “Wban Crw”! Thanks to Sarah Wynn, the artists, and everyone else who gave their time and their energy so generously for Pendalar. An excellent evening! – looking forward to Pop Pendalar 2007!

A full house of 400 at Galeri, Caernarfon ,with many others looking for tickets, ensured a profit of over £3750 for Pendalar School's Appeal last Saturday night.

Welsh pop stars of yesteryear gave their time to perform, once again, in front of their adoring fans and it was as if they had never been away. The standard of their performance was amazing and people were carried away back into their distant teenage years!

The Pendalar School Appeal has now raised £25,000 and it is hoped that £½m can be raised before the new school is opened at the end of 2006.

The Appeal is to raise money for expensive specialist equipment required for children who have severe and profound and muliple learning difficulties. Money will also be used to install themed gardens, cycle paths, special play areas as well as equipping special teaching areas with all necessary resources.

Many thanks to sponsors Dafydd Hardy & Co who have also promised to sponsor next year's concert Nostalgia Night 2!!

Press release regarding Golf 2004:

Golf 2004

230 golfers turned out to play golf at Bangor’s St Deiniol Golf Club on Saturday July 10th. One guest had travelled from London to play, one flew in from Alicante and several others from South Wales. All had one aim in mind, to raise money for Ysgol Pendalar, Caernarfon.

By the end of a long day £2700 had been raised for the school funds.

Winners of the annual event were; Alwyn Williams and Henry Aston along with father and son Ron Evans & Dylan Evans who later in the day had to leave after the presentation due to Dylan becoming a father to a baby girl.

Quote from organiser Mr Ieuan Roberts;

"I never cease to be amazed at what happens during these golf days…..the sheet with the tee-times was filled in a week or so of it being up in the clubhouse and the officials at St Deiniol are so helpful. Stars from S4C who had travelled from South Wales along with opera singer Gwyn Hughes Jones, played a round of golf in the afternoon and still found time to return for the evening’s entertainment, some even provided the entertainment in a truly impromptu noson lawen.

I got home at 1.00 a.m and switched on the 24 hour news channel and saw that Sport Relief had raised over £12m in about 5 hours and I felt deflated until the morning when I recalled the genuine fun and happiness that was associated with our unique golf day, once again."

Thanks
Thanks again to Nant Cyf. for sponsoring this event, thanks once gain.
